Do we spend too much valuable time and energy chasing something that is not achievable for 99 percent of the population? Do we end up feeling as if we have failed, and our self image is devalued again?
Instead of focusing on leading a healthy lifestyle that includes good food choices and sensible exercise, some of us may be led into potentially dangerous behaviour patterns, such as binge eating, purging, excessive cosmetic surgery, overly restrictive diets, and obsessive exercise.
Having a positive image of yourself means that you are comfortable with the body you have. It does not mean that you think your body is perfect, rather that you accept and commit to making it the best it can be, and take care of yourself and appreciate all your good assets. It is okay to feel good about your body even if you don’t look like America’s Next Top Model! – almost none of us do, yet we all deserve to be confident and be able to accept ourselves. The benefits of a positive self image will be evident in how you approach situations in every part of your life.
Here are some tips to get you started:
* Take responsibility….., when you start to feel negative about your body, do something practical, like setting goals to make the improvements that you want.
* If you feel that people are critical about your body image, stop allowing them to impose their views on you, or spending so much time with them – anyone who does that is toxic to your mental health.
* Try to see another side to others rather than being critical yourself. Everyone has an individual beauty… we are all different.
* Do something good for your inner self and appreciate all you have to offer.
If we like ourselves enough we will be more content with every aspect of our lifestyle, image and achievements in life. If you don’t like the results you are getting, change what you are doing, and think and see things differently. It’s up to you!!
Take care until the next time! Violet King…..Personal Counsellor.
