My name is Steve Woods, a solicitor specialising in claims for asbestos related diseases, based in Chester, UK. I have been coming to Spain to see clients for over 5 years now and recently I went to Calpe, Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa.
I am aware that there are a number of questions that make people worried about the possibility of making a claim. My message is, if in doubt ask! Usually, apart from an initial meeting, the claim is unlikely to take up much of your time. All I need to know is how you came into contact with asbestos.
Sometimes this is not as straightforward as it sounds and I find that face to face meetings often help people remember details they have forgotten. Even if they did not actually work with asbestos they may have worked alongside people who did. It is possible to be exposed to substantial amounts of asbestos in this way. For example, I successfully claimed for an office worker who had to visit a dusty factory for a short period every day.
Another common problem is that companies that traded in the 1960s, for example, have long since ceased to exist. Even so, with investigations I can often trace insurers who provided cover for these companies and they are obliged to deal with these claims.
A change in the rules now enables a solicitor to agree with his client to take a share of any money recovered. Most solicitors do this but I do not because I believe my clients should receive whatever compensation I can obtain for them in full. I can also guarantee that all claims are dealt with by a qualified solicitor.
These questions can take some time to sort out and so the quicker a claim is started the quicker they can be dealt with.
