Extra Portions - Sandra’s - Javea

Extra Portions - Sandra’s - Javea
by Fiona Jennison

Like many parents over many visits to the Javea Arenal I have walked, cycled and assisted rollerblading and scootering past a little café called Sandra’s on many an occasion, near the Mas y Mas supermarket, and never looked too closely. The exterior of the café never really grabbed my attention.

So finally I popped in, on a school day, alone, and starving. It doesn’t look “all that” from the outside, but I walked into a real treasure of a café. The interior revealed stylish modern furniture and décor all in delicious lime and chocolate brown. Modern, funky, and filled with contented customers who had clearly made this their second home.sandras inside 1

I was greeted across the counter with big smiles, an immediate response to my hungry order of a toastie, and the cleanest toilets that I have perhaps every visited (I felt like someone had sprayed me with perfume as I left the loo).

Upon asking for Sandra, one of the smiley owners made herself known as Julie. It turns out that her husband Trevor’s mother loved Spain, but sadly died in Mallorca. This was Sandra. So when Julie and Trevor were working their fingers to the bone in the UK for shall I say a big business in food and wine, both their birthdays fell in December. They hated the fact that they could never get time off together. When Sandra died, something snapped in Julie and Trevor. Let’s make the most of life, they said to each other. Let’s go where Sandra loved to be.

So who do you think Julie and Trevor worked for in the UK? Yep the clue is in the colour scheme. Waitrose and Marks and Spencers. And the quality continues in this super clean, healthy and vibrant café. All UK products, and nothing fried. All grilled.

Female Focus and Sandra’s are a great fit. As I chatted to Julie about what was important or special about her café, eaves dropping friends shouted out about the scones. Others mentioned the helpfulness. I witnessed people dropping in with questions about how to do what in Javea. They are a little Citizens Advice Bureau in Javea.

Julie is very proud of the fact that women feel comfortable going alone any time of day or night to her establishment. It’s cuddly and safe. Friday nights rock for all from 16 to 80 years old with discos hosted by Shortie B of Overseas FM. Very entertaining and very friendly.

Check it out please. There is a choice of sandwiches from 3€ and salads from 6€. You can’t go wrong here. And dads, if you need a break from being buried in the sand, this is a perfect little hideaway. And ladies when you have forgiven him, it’s your turn. They even have tables with sea views and that’s what makes us tick, right?!
